Day 23 - Changing your surrounding

Choose a room where you spend a considerable part of your time. The experiment involves rearranging the furniture. You can also take down pictures and remove decorations, or put some up if your room is rather bare.

Before rearranging

  • Where else could the major pieces of furniture go?
  • What other layout is possible?
  • What alterations could be made to the decorations?

Rearranging

  • Note carefully where you put things in your new arrangement

After rearranging

  • How comfortable do you feel now?
  • what effect does the new layout have on your behaviour?
    • I'm more relaxed. It feels like there is at least one element of my life over which I have control.
  • What are you doing differently?
    • I'm being much more careful about where things go. I like the order and don't want to disrupt it.
  • What have you learned about the effects of physical surroundings?
    • They do change mood - to the same extent that overhead lighting can be stark and sombre compared to ambient lighting.
  • What have you learned about change and its effects on behaviour?
    • I like order and simplicity and find an atmosphere where that exists to be beneficial to feeling good. As for change..it depends on how a thing is changed. I like variety in my environment, so i'm inclined to make changes often..though not quite on the scale I've just done.
Day 23 - Changing your surrounding
1 How did you feel? I really like doing this
2 In what way did you find the challenge useful?
Remember even if the challenge was negative this is an excellent learning for yourself.
I've set myself this challenge from the beginning of the 28 day challenge. I intend rearranging each room in turn but i've begun with the living room and am now working on the garden.
3 What insight did you gain? I have always felt that changing your immediate surroundings can change your mood.
4 What did you learn about yourself? More like confirm rather than learn - I like variety in my environment but I also like order and a lack of clutter.
