This was a mammoth task and thankfully we delegated it to a company that specialises in installing them. Just as well, given the amount of granite they had to dig through and move in the process. They excavated a six by four metre square hole, over two metres deep, into solid granite. The agreed site for the fosse was in the area to the right of the main gate. The spoil from the dig ended up on the raised section of the garden. At some point it will be moved and used to level the immediate area.

As a final bit of extra work the fosse team dug a path for our new water supply from its source at the end of the garden to the gable end of the house. It took them about half an hour to dig and then refill. It probably would have taken us a couple of weeks at least - sore backs to boot.
